This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students did not have science the last few years. I am trying to motivate and excite them with activities that allow them to create and experiment. Every student learns differently. The hands-on projects that they will create with these materials are so important for visual learners.

Our school provides 100% free lunch to all students.

Most of our students come from low-income homes, many with only one parent. When a child is homeless, hungry, or in a stressful living environment the motivation to succeed in school is not a priority. When students are in my classroom I want them to feel safe, welcome, and engaged. They work in groups, in pairs and on their own. In my class they have the opportunity to create and explore the exciting world of science!

My Project

As part of the 7th grade curriculum, students are required to create models to show understanding. We are a space and Earth science class. My students create models of Earth Layers and constellations, as well as completing other projects that require glue sticks, crayons, and paints. The Crayola Twistables, markers, and glue sticks will be used this year and next for all of the projects we complete in order to show understanding of a science unit.

Learning is so much more than a teacher lecturing to a class of disengaged students.

These materials will bring laughter, creativity and group work to our classroom. These projects are needed for engagement and they are the things that are being stripped from many schools.
