My Students
My scholars are one-of-a-kind as they enter the classroom daily with minimal resources and guidance. They try and perform their best without weighing in on negative conditions that alter their performance. They are from a surrounding neighborhood plagued with poverty and cyclical oppression. 21st century materials is what we are trying to acquire, which will completely enhance my classroom instruction and student results. The wobble chairs will especially help some of my students who struggle with conditions that cause constant movement. They will be better able to complete independent work and writing tasks at their seat while still having the ability to wiggle, fidget, rock as well as move around.
No teacher should have to do "without" and unfortunately our scholars are more consumed with where they are going to sleep for the night and whether or not they are going to be fed.
I believe in the power of home to school connections and I want to be able to send home basic crayons and glue sticks for their journals to be used as a form of therapy.
My Project
The classroom materials that I am requesting will allow my students to read and listen to books at their own pace. They will also allow students to hear uninterrupted fluent and expressive reading. The CD players will help my students further develop listening skills needed in order to become successful readers. Hearing a book read on CD will help the students in my class see how words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. The more students listen, the greater the likelihood that they will learn new vocabulary words. If funded these materials will allow my students the opportunity to listen and read books again again.
