My students need books and resources that promote literacy, learning through multiple perspectives, present complexity of issues and supplement the depth that our textbook lacks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help students find joy in reading and learn history in more creative ways. Students need supplemental books like historical fiction to promote multiple perspectives and provide depth and complexity. Help them move beyond meaningless facts/dates and instill the love of reading.
My students attend a school in a community where the majority live below the poverty line and lack access to opportunities and materials other than what the school can provide.
Some come to class with deep background knowledge to draw upon while most have not been given the experiences to relate with what the curriculum and textbook is teaching. While students feel the pressure to increase test scores in English Language Arts, our school library is limited and far too many students will tell you that they have never been assigned a reading that they enjoyed.
My students are curious and thrive when they are challenged critically and are motivated when they can relate to the content. I want to change their attitudes about reading, provide them with the resources they need to be successful and learn and apply History in critical and meaningful ways.
My Project
These books will be used to supplement and enrich the instructional program for students. Our textbooks provide general facts at best and lack the detail and complexity of past events and people. These books will introduce them to characters who have different points of view so they can see the difficulty in constructing history and learn history from multiple perspectives. These books and resources also can be used to support English Learners who struggle to access the content and need help with language development. They may also be used as engaging unit openers.
Help me develop a classroom library that gives current students and hundreds of students in the future, options to choose a book they want to read and an alternative way to access content.
While the books I am requesting may not be enough to reach all the instructional goals that I have for them, it's an important start. For now, I am unable to ask students to do historical research using our library because there are only outdated and few books that support English Learners and connect with my curriculum.
