My classroom is a self-contained classroom. The classroom is made up of 12 students with myself the special education teacher and a 5 teaching assistants. In my self-contained classroom, instruction is individualized to the specific needs of each student.
The student's ages range from 10 to 21 years old.
All 12 students are confined to a wheelchair and needs help in every area of daily living skills. Each student’s goals are worked on every day along with the grade level curriculum. My students stay in the classroom for art, gym and lunch. My lessons are geared towards life skills and the specific disabilities of the students in each classroom.
I find creative ways to bring the outside world into the classroom. Many of my students have visual impairments and need images to be displayed on the smart board, this is why a computer would benefit them. Accessing the internet can let them explore places they can only dream to go.
My Project
Having a disability should not impair their ability to participate in a typical classroom environment. Computer-based technologies can play an important role in a students education and in life. Computers can facilitate different educational activities to meet a variety of needs of my students who have severe disabilities. It can help them become active learners and communicators in the classroom. These computers will also allow them to explore the world outside the four walls of the classroom, students can experience things that they only have thought about. Giving them the education they deserve, allowing them to be on the same level as their peers.
