Learning Beyond Physical Spaces-The Virtual Classroom

My students need 5 Chromebooks for a 21st century learning environment and a flipped classroom experience!

My Students

The school where my students attend is in a desert valley surrounded by red sandstone cliffs, volcanic mesas, and a sandy river that gives life to this special place. Some students have lived in the area for generations and others have moved here more recently. With nature in their backyard and beautiful parks that are spread across the city, children in this area naturally love to be outside. Whether it's camping along a mountain stream, exploring rock features, cooling off at a splash pad, or simply riding bikes, these students know how to seize the moment in this amazing landscape!

In a classroom that promotes personalized learning, today's students thrive on making real-world connections when solving problems.

They are digital natives and love using technology to enhance their experience in the classroom. Students are motivated by challenging activities and quickly learn that mastering a skill takes hard work, practice, and determination. With a growth mindset, these students acknowledge that making mistakes is part of the learning process and the key to their success!

My Project

In today’s 21st century classroom, students need one-to-one devices to experience a virtual learning environment. More specifically in my classroom, adding more Chromebooks will help create a web-based platform in which students expand their learning beyond the constraints of brick and mortar. It will transform my traditional pedagogy into a thriving blended learning classroom! As a future Google Educator, I am proficient with G Suite (formerly Google Apps), for education such as Google Classroom and Drive. Having an online classroom to supplement the physical one will eliminate worksheets and packets. It will also bridge the gap between home and school. For example, when students are absent, they can easily work on assignments and projects posted on Google Classroom in any location, as long as they have a device and Internet access.

My students will learn how to use Chromebooks responsibly, safely, and with purpose.

Digital citizenship is a fundamental part of my overall classroom conduct and management plan. As more Chromebooks are implemented in my classroom, students will quickly apply the four C's of 21st century skills that include collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. With Chromebooks my students will be able to master these skills as they work on project-based learning activities that are personalized and connect to real-life scenarios. For example, my students will learn how to use the online publishing tool, Lucidpress to design posters, newsletters, and brochures. They will also collaborate with each other when producing flowcharts and mind maps through the web-based diagramming program, Lucidchart.

As an educator, it is my duty to prepare students for careers of the future in an ever-changing world. This project will give my students the tools they need to make this happen!
