Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 17-22-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are learning the skills they will need to move on to the next step in their life. This is very different for each of them. Some will live independently, with a roommate, stay at home or continue to live in a group home or facility. No matter their living arrangements they need the skills to contribute to their daily living environment.
All of my students look forward to some kind of independence and a way to contribute to society.
During the school week, we use our learned skills to cook, clean within the class and around the school. We attend weekly Community Based Instruction, where we assist a business in their daily tasks. This provides our kids with the ability to learn new skills and work with others in the community. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.
My Project
My students are learning basic daily living skills as well as vocational skills. I teach students who are Intellectually disabled the transitional skills they will need for independent living. We have a kitchen in our class that allows the students to learn basic cooking and cleaning skills. Therefore, we are requesting for such items as a microwave, pitchers, and tablecloths.
My students are eager to be independent and learning how to use basic kitchen appliances will enable them to do this.
The students get a sense of fulfillment when doing things for themselves and learning these skills in a safe place like our class allows for mistakes and also great successes.
