This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful students. They are so eager to learn. They adhere to classroom rules and generally stay on task. However, as we know, students today are under enormous pressure. The expectation set for students today is very high. Every year, students in my school are expected to reach the NYS goals for their grades regardless of the challenges that they face due to their circumstances. Many of my students have economic challenges and lack parental support. As a teacher, it is frustrating to know that many of our students are at a disadvantage, but must still meet their state standards and expectations. The reality is that not all students have school supplies that are needed for school. I also have students with IEPs and English Language Learners.
These students need to develop and catch up to their grade expectations, and these materials can help develop their academic potential.
My Project
Teaching third grade, I want my students to gather at the carpet to listen to the lesson. My students have not gotten the full experience of school for 18 months due to Covid. I want them to gather in front of me sitting on my chair with the easel at hand to help with the lesson. The last grade they completed in the building was kindergarten. My students need to get up and move around and not sit for six hours a day. You cannot expect them to sit quietly and not go stir crazy. Showing them routines: leaving their seat, walking to the carpet area, paying attention, not playing around and walking back to their seat, will teach them self-control.
I’ll have the students listen to me teach for 10-15 minutes from the carpet (whole group), have the students move about the room in some sort of cooperative learning activity to practice the concept, return to the carpet to discuss the learning that had just taken place, and finally, send them to the seat to complete independent work.
Their retention levels will tend to be higher than whole group from the seats. The more involved students are in the process, the more interactive it becomes and all will learn as much from one another as from me.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
