Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

School is going to look very different this year. As kindergarten is my students' first experience with formal education, I am determined to make this experience as positive as possible. My five- and six-year-old students will most likely be learning both at home and school come fall. Our school is diverse in every sense of the word and it is important to me that they each have what they need to make their learning at home time as effective as possible.

My students learn best through doing and creating, and I strive to give them the environment that best meets their needs.

They deserve the best start to their education and the foundation to help them succeed, whether at school or virtually. They are eager to learn with all the tools I give them.

My Project

Everything is uncertain right now, but one thing we know is that students need to learn. My students have been thinking about their first day of kindergarten for as long as they can remember, and the reality is not what they expected. Our current reality is that my students will most likely split their time learning at school and at home (live virtual lessons and independent online learning).

My goal is to help my students get all the materials they need to make the most of their learning at home time.

The books I am asking for are ones we do many lessons with during the first weeks of school. They also need writing journals (a favorite kindergarten activity) and since it is not safe for them to bring the writing journals back and forth from school to home. I am asking for journals they can keep at home that look exactly like the ones we use at school. They will also need math activities and basic supplies that will be used to make the most of our virtual time together.

I have spent time this summer making sure that my virtual teaching will be time well spent with my students, and these materials are the start in making that happen.
