This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are the youngest group of learners at Linden Tree Elementary School in Bronx NY. We are 4 and 5 years old and we love to explore and create everyday.. We love art, stories, science and problem solving.
We are enthusiastic, reflective, and resilient and now we are learning at home due to the We came to school everyday ready to try out our ideas, ready to share our passions, and ready to learn new skills.
Our families are trying very hard to make home learning work but many lack the funds to buy all the supplies needed so that we can express our ideas and create things that help us show others what we know.
My Project
When the Corona Virus closed down New York City Schools and forced the students and teachers to work from home my classroom families took on this challenge with thoughtfulness and resilience. They set up work spaces for their 4 and 5 year olds. They make sure their children are available just to see Video Morning Messages and Afternoon Stories and they help their children complete the challenges with the supplies they have. They post work, and are genuinely trying to ensure their children are learning everyday; but this is very difficult to do without supplies.
The New York City Board of Education has done an amazing job getting students IPADs and Internet; the problem is that when you are 4 and 5 years old much of your learning does not take place on a computer using early childhood materials not always easily accessible especially during a pandemic.
The goal of this project is to put materials in the hands of my classroom families so they can create enriching pre-k environments in their homes. Families have specifically enquired how to get scissors paper and crayons and it breaks my heart that they have the willingness to work with their children but not the means to do so. It is my hope that with the art materials, the books and the math materials I can make learning kits for them and guide the parents by providing enriching activities that will promote problem solving skill building and most importantly a love of learning.
