Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the Mental Health Counselor at a Title I school located in East Palo Alto, CA. One of our goals as a school is to serve the WHOLE CHILD. This means in addition to providing a comprehensive academic education, we also prioritize students' social and emotional learning and well being. I work to promote students’ self-awareness and self-regulation, as well as social awareness and social skills.

For many of our students, school is one of the only places accessible to them in terms of emotional and mental health resources and supports.

Ninety-one percent of our students participate in the free and reduced-price meal program. Ninety percent of our students speak English as a second language. Ninety-eight percent of our students will be first-generation college students. Ninety percent of our students are Latino; 6.5% are African-American; 2% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. Our students are scholars striving to become the best versions of themselves and deserve all the resources and supports that are readily available to students in higher income communities.

My Project

As you might know or can imagine this year is going to be an interesting one, full of the unknown. Our school has started the year in 100% distance learning. While the hope is to return to school in person as soon as it is safe for all to do so, it remains unclear when that will be.

Our goal during all this uncertainty and all these transitions is to support our students academically, mentally, emotionally, and socially to the best of our ability.

When we are able to return to school, it is likely that school is going to have to look very different for my students. I would like to be as prepared as possible to help my students learn now, during distance learning, but also when we eventually return to our physical school.

Some of the items I am requesting will be immediately sent to students to support them during distance learning, such as the sand timers and notebooks, while others will be used when we are able to return to school, like the yoga ball chairs. Some of these items will be useful to students both during distance learning and back at school, such as laminating materials for sturdiness and to make them easier to sanitize for safety. Overall the materials in this project will support my students to feel supported and help them feel inspired to learn.
