Learning As a Lifestyle

My students need access to various online resources to extend and enrich their learning both inside and outside the classroom walls.

My Students

Fifth grade is an important grade because it is when they start to become individuals and really begin to think about who they want to become. They may not be ready to choose a career path, but are deciding if they are going to give it their all to do well in school, sports, and friendships. My students give it their all, all day, every day! Technology helps me motivate them!

Unfortunately, our school receives very little funding for resources like technology and technology-related supplies.

We do the best we can to share among classes, but the continuous use of technology, daily, will help them become more proficient and motivated. Help me, help them!

My Project

My project is to plan a Family Engagement Night where I inspire my students and their families to engage in the learning process just for the fun of it. In order to engage in the learning process independently and efficiently, students and families need quality resources. I am requesting a class subscription to a few well respected digital resources, such as BrainPOP, Flocabulary, and Scholastic Magazines. Each of these resources has print, visual, and audio aspects to their presentation of information at a level that is appropriate for my students. These informational materials can be accessed during independent reading time in school, for assistance with enrichment projects or simply for the purpose of student centered personal learning initiated by the student which is the focus of the family engagement night. Students will have the opportunity to share what they learned through Google Classroom and screencasts. These digital learning tools will give them access to more and different information about what they learn in class and related topics and themes. Having access to safe, user friendly, age appropriate literature and visuals from various sources will provide my students with an engaging range of information to build their vocabulary and knowledge base which will help them make connections while learning new content and build their stamina, comprehension skills, and critical thinking abilities.

Most of the Learning as a Lifestyle Parent Engagement Night will be spent sharing and engaging families in how to access the student centered, standards based digital resources I am requesting subscriptions to as a means to making learning an enjoyable, fulfilling part of their life and an important part of their individual identity and as a valued priority of their family unit.
