Learning Applied Physics with CO2 Dragsters

My students need CO2 dragster bodies to design and test their knowledge of friction, inertia, forces, and Newton&'s laws of motion.

My Students

"I'm not smart enough to be an engineer!" My students need your help to change this mindset! They are smart enough, but I need your help to show them. With CO2 dragster bodies they will learn about physics, CAD software, design, wood working skills, paint, and so much more.

My students are amazing!

About 80% of my students get free or reduced price lunch. About 75% of them live in apartments or rental properties. About 5% of my students are homeless. We are a low income school. My students struggle to meet Washington State standards for Math and Science. They are SMART kids! They are excited to build things, and take them apart. They love technology, computers, robots, cars. They don't always realize that they are geniuses, but I do my best to show them how smart they are every day.

My Project

My students will learn all about the physics of motion, friction, and inertia in a hands-on real-world way! They will get to learn the art of design when they use 3-D CAD software to design their dragsters. Then they will get to use our woodshop to turn their designs into reality. They will learn how to use scroll saws, drill presses, sanders, and lots of other things. Finally, they will get to put their knowledge of physics into action when they race their cars! This project incorporates art, design, science, technology, engineering, and math. My students will be having a ton of fun and learning so much.

My students don't usually get to do hands-on anything at home or at school.

Give them the opportunity and they will excel! They need to engage in real-world projects to learn difficult concepts, and this project is perfect. Who knows, maybe we'll convince a few to go on to pursue science or engineering as a career.
