This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a high school, special ed class in an awesome 109-year-old high school that services those with low-income and Title I needs. Our class consists of students with a wide range of abilities from autism to speech language impairments and cognitively delays.

Every day is a new adventure when we enter our doors.

We have quite an assortment of interests and skills and we like to see how many different ways we can incorporate them into our daily lives.

My Project

As a way to get my group of Lego-loving highly inquisitive minds participating in hands-on activities and problem-solving skills, we are requesting a Lego MINDSTORMS kit, a Wonder Workshop Dash Robot, and a 4K Action Camera camera with mounts to help with stability. This project would allow my students to experiment with the building and programming of robots and learn how to then record what they did to teach others. These materials will also encourage teambuilding skills as well.

Phil Collins says it well with his lyrics, "In learning, you will teach, and in teaching, you will learn.” Because many of my students are in a self-contained classroom due to special needs, they do not often get chances to participate in activities involving higher thinking STEM skills or using the technology often afforded to their peers enrolled in programs with more funding.

What better way to get a kid excited to learn and share that learning with others? I know I am excited, as their teacher, to watch them!
