Learning and Playing in the Rain

My students need indoor activities and games to enhance their learning in Mathematics.

My Students

It's indoor recess, it's raining, and there is nothing to do but walk the halls, talk to friends, eat snacks, or occasionally play with the teacher bought classroom game sets. What if, that time was used for math games that enhance understanding of concepts all disguised as FUN time.

Our school is literally located in the center of Oahu, in the State of Hawaii.

In this location we are blessed with morning and afternoon rains that come down from the North or up from the South and over the mountain from the East. Our students are often made to play indoors. I have 25 students, and additional 5th graders neighboring us, who would like the chance to play challenging games that are motivational and fun.

My Project

Having the games and centers set up in the room would allow my students to use their time for fun, but the underlying reason would be to build their knowledge in mathematics. It's like hiding the vegetables in with the fruits when making a smoothie. The resources requested include word problem activities, math facts practice and centers, and common core activities. All items would benefit the students immensely in helping them achieve their math standards.

No time will be wasted!

If it's a raining day or any extra time in class my students can get involved in the activities and learn and play under the rain. They can take their experiences and apply them to real world situations and they can say, "I did that during recess".
