My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. One challenge the children at my school have is not getting enough opportunities to use their hands and use their imagination. Many of the children start school lacking the motor skills needed to hold writing tools which makes it difficult to write and cut properly.
In the 21st century, children are required to think creatively and critically in all subject areas.
As technology develops and children are spending most of their free time using it, apps, electronics, and video game robots are doing for the children thus taking the hands-on exploration away.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will create more opportunities for my students to discover how things work by experimenting with their hands as well as strengthening their problem solving and motor skills. We need kinetic sand, water play tools, and Can Do Science Discovery kits.
Encouraging hands-on discovery and play is important to create a sense of wonder, spark imagination, and make children eager to learn more.
Being hands-on is especially important in the classroom because it allows students to engage in kinesthetic learning. Studies have shown that kinesthetic learning, where a student carries out physical activities rather than listening to a lecture, is the most popular type of learning with students. 'Doing' helps them to gain a better understanding of the material. It allows students to experiment with trial and error and learn from their mistakes.
