Museums, Planetariums and Aquariums is how science is brought to life in my classroom. As an educator of the middle school community, I have the opportunity and privilege to service students with special needs. The students whom I service have disabilities that include learning disabilities, cognitive deficits and emotional behavior disorders.
The difficulty arises because of the limited access my students have to "live" ecosystems.
The school community that I service encompasses over 300 students, with a special education population of 22% whom as a special education teacher, I support and provide classroom instruction. Through out my career as an educator I have had great successes when my students are provided with the support of “hands on minds on” science tools and resources.
The inclusion of an aquarium would foster responsibility, and serve as a motivator to encourage my students to become lifelong learners.
My Project
Having a classroom aquarium will enrich the lives of students by giving them a hands-on science experience. We will learn how to care for many different types of fish. We will also learn about keeping a cleanly environment, different types of fish food, and different types of plants that exist in an aquarium. We will address the daily needs of the aquarium by creating a realistic habitat for marine animals. The aquarium will also foster responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. The aquarium will be a wonderful addition to my class of lifelong learners. The students will use interact with the aquarium on a daily basis.
An aquarium in the classroom will provide my students with multiple learning opportunities.
By having an aquarium in the classroom, the students will be able to compare and contrast aquarium habitats with natural marine habitats, discuss potential problems that arise when marine animals are kept in aquariums, and learn responsibility. Having a classroom aquarium will have a broad impact on student learning. Your donation will be a huge difference throughout the whole school year for my scientist in training.
