My students need a carpet where everyone has a place, book bins to hold their reading treasures, a pocket chart to turn in their completed work, and a pretty border too!
Mahatma Gandhi's quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world," is a message I want my students to live by. The world awaits the positive contributions they will make. A good education, with lots of reading adventures and wonderful writing, will empower them. Our carpet and book bins await!
My students are bright and curious eight and nine year old children.
Our school is a safe and wonderful place to be a kid or a staff member! We are located in a prime fruit-growing area surrounded by many acres of beautiful orchards. Because a high percentage of our students come from low income families we are a Title 1 school in a village of approximately 4,200 people.
My Project
My students will use this carpet every day as a gathering place for reading and writing mini-lessons. In the afternoon when I read aloud to my third graders this carpet will be a magical place that takes us on many adventures. I love the fact that it provides a place and space for everyone! The individual book bins will hold the reading adventures each student chooses, and some I choose for them. The hanging pocket chart contains 30 pockets, one for each student to turn in their completed work. This teacher can see at a glance who's work is missing AND everything is instantly in alphabetical order! We have a very large white board in our classroom. The border will frame and divide this board into the content-specific sections; math, reading, writing, science and social studies.
I am anxious to build classroom community with the addition of this special gathering place for my students.
The lessons we will learn here about reading and writing and making our world a better place will surely make this feel like a magic carpet that even Aladdin would be envious of.
