My Students
I teach ELL (English language learners), special Ed, and regular students in 3 different 5th grade learning levels. In all, I teach a total of 64 wonderful students. I have extremely diverse students, some of whom are new immigrants and don't speak English. Most of the students that do speak English, speak a different language as their first language.
I like to say that I have the world in my classroom.
I work in an inner-city Chicago school whose students speak more than 64 languages combined. I can say without a doubt that this is one of the most wonderful schools I have ever worked at. The harmony between teachers and the administration helps bring out the best in our students. Despite these wonderful characteristics, our school lacks the necessary funding to support enriched education and progressive attitudes which are essential for helping students learn and develop skills to get ahead in life. As a teacher, I do my best to provide what I can for my students. However, I am looking for funding to buy books that will help my students learn the rich heritage and history of this great country.
My Project
Students are placed in 4 different centers based on their reading levels to comprehend and learn vocabulary using different non fiction text materials. The first is the Vocabulary Center where they learn vocabulary using Marzeno's 6 step activity. Next is the Skill Activity Center where students work independently to learn different skills such as compare and contrast, beginning- middle- end, sequence of events and many others.. Students work using different organizers in the Skill Activity center. The 3rd is the Writing Center where students work on writing focusing on comprehension activity. The last one is the Guided Reading Center where students work in small groups with the teacher using different non fiction text materials to develop comprehension and academic discussion skills. In addition to these groups, there are two ELL groups where students get additional support from me as well as an ELL support staff. Here students work on 4 step vocabulary activity, sequence of events and comprehension building activities using organizers and open ended questions in the writing center. We strive to help the students with the right materials to help them understand and comprehend different texts in guided reading center. The non fiction books will help my students learn about American history and her heritage while concurrently building their comprehension skills and vocabulary in the learning centers. Since so many of my students are in different learning levels, they require a more tailored approach rather than a uniform one.
These books will help ensure that each student is able to learn to the best of his or her ability without becoming overwhelmed.
Furthermore, buying a fewer number of books that cover different topics will allow students to pick something that interests them. Ask any parent or teacher--the best way to teach a child is to make it interesting!
