I teach in a very rural and low income school district in central Pennsylvania and I want my students to learn about the world around them.
As I mentioned above, I live and teach in a country setting. Many of my students have not traveled outside of our area. I want them to be able to explore the world around them, learn about new cultures and the similarities and differences we all share. The best way I know how to do this, is through reading. In our school there is a banner hanging that says, “Books open the door to discovery”. Unfortunately, my classroom library is limited and needs some help.
My school district has begun the first steps to help this problem. A new Social Studies series was adopted two years ago. This new series gives my students a glimpse outside of our community and begins to teach them about the past. Like many schools, because of limited funds only the bare minimum was ordered. In this proposal I have asked for a variety of resources, mainly age appropriate reading material. The different book series include biographies, American symbols, world photos and map skills. I have also asked for an interactive globe and various games. All of these resources can and will be integrated across the curriculum, helping my students to improve their math, reading and science skills.
