Learning About the Tongva Native Americans - Part 2
My students need 14 copies of the book, California's Indian Nations, so they can learn more about the Tongva Native Americans who once lived in our community.
I teach an amazing group of third graders in Los Angeles. My school is a higher poverty level school but there is no limit on learning with the right resources. We are a great multicultural family that loves to learn.
My students learn best when they are excited about the topic, such as learning about the Tongva Native Americans.
Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. All students receive free breakfast, and over 35% receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
We are currently researching the Tongva Native Americans who once lived on Catalina Island, at our Southern California beaches, and inland too. My students are learning about their basketry, lifestyle, diet, and what their homes were made of. Unfortunately, there are not many books available that are appropriate for third graders to read.
I have requested 14 copies of the book, California's Indian Nations (Primary Source Readers) by Ben Nussbaum because it is filled with great photographs and information about the culture and history of three California Indian tribes: the Yana, the Yokuts, and the Tongva.
With these books, my students will be able to focus on learning more about the Tongva and also contrasting the lives of the Tongva with the other two tribes. Your help donating to this project is greatly appreciated!
