Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students enrolled in this middle school are bright, eager, and curious scholars with a desire for learning. Most of these students will be first-generation college students: they know and understand that education is the key to success.
The books in the library should be in decent condition, contain accurate information, and be relevant and engaging.
Though these students live in a poverty-stricken community, their lives are filled with a wealth of resiliency, persistence, and determination. These students deserve to have a library that is a safe, inviting, comfortable space where they can come to read, work independently, or in groups.
My Project
My students will have access to stories that feature immigrants and refugees' frequently harrowing and dangerous experiences. They will learn about the strength resiliency of characters like Aref from the "Turtle of Oman" and Ángela & Jaime in "The Only Road." The idea of an idyllic home and what makes a new country a home is a universal theme featured in these books. Many students who read these stories will relate to the experiences described, while others will deepen their knowledge of immigrants and refugees.
This selection of books is overflowing with colorful stories that will delight and inform readers about the experiences of immigrants and refugees that are often forced to leave their homes behind in search of safety, employment, and access to basic needs.
Books like these offer a window to compassion, acceptance, and understanding of people from all sorts of backgrounds.
