I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of the students are African American and 96% of my students come from one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
I'd love to be able to make class more kinesthetic for my students. My students are very hands-on learners who enjoy visual and audio aids and presenting in front of the class. Last quarter, they recorded newscasts as if they were alive during the Industrial Revolution, and it was a huge success. Students who normally do not participate were fully engaged. I'd love to expand upon this project and do more creative projects along these same lines with a unit on the Great Depression. I'd love to get them out of their seats more and recreate history. In order to do creative projects like this, they have to be very knowledgeable about the event in order to be the interviewer or the interviewee, and they have fun in the process.
This year, I'd love for my students to have access to camcorders so we can record skits, newscasts, and documentaries for an upcoming unit on the Great Depression. I would also love to have supplemental reading sources on the Great Depression so they can gain content knowledge and boost their literacy skills, which is a skill that is so critical to success in college. Not only will my students have fun, but they will enjoy doing the necessary reading and research that will prepare them for life after high school. This is where you come in! My school does not have the money to get these resources.
Your donation will drastically impact my students' understanding of the Great Depression. They will learn that history is a lot more than dead people and dates and that history is complex but can also be very engaging! More importantly, they will be prepared to succeed in college with the help of these resources.
