Learning About the Great Depression Through Monopoly

My students need 7 Monopoly game boards and a supplemental book entitled "Monopoly: The World's Most Famous Game - And How It Got That Way".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Broullire's classroom raised $311

This project is fully funded

I teach 11th grade U.S. History in a public charter high school. 100% of our students are African American and more than 95% live in an area plagued by poverty and crime. Our school is a beacon of hope for our students and their families.

I'm always trying to think of innovative ways to teach history and connect what my students learn to their every day lives in order for them to see history's relevance. As I started planning for a unit on the Great Depression, I couldn't help but imagine several interactive lessons revolving around a family favorite of mine...Monopoly. After all, the game was created by Mr. Charles Darrow, an unemployed man from Pennsylvania who created the game to get through the difficulties of the Great Depression. The game was an escape from his normal life--a place where he could acquire land, houses, and hotels and then rent or sell his wealth to fellow players. My students will make connections to this time period in United States history through a series of well-structured lessons about the history of the game and Mr. Darrow's struggles. I also believe my students will really find Mr. Darrow's personal account of the Great Depression very intriguing and, in a way, similar to many of their own struggles. The only barrier to this plan is money. We do not have the budget to purchase these resources.

In order to make this become a reality, we need Monopoly boards and a supplemental book that will act as "pre-reading" for my students. This will truly enhance their learning of the Great Depression. My students will understand how Mr. Darrow's struggles during the Great Depression led him to create a board game enjoyed by millions. Further, they will have a better understanding of how the Great Depression forever changed society and caused Americans to pull together to survive.

By helping purchase these resources for our classroom, you will make it possible for my students to make connections to popular icons they are already familiar with to an important time period in our country's history. Please help them understand history is all around us--even in board games.
