Learning about the Biltmore Estate through the Eyes of Serafina

Help me give my students their own copy of "Serafina and the Black Cloak" in preparation to our field trip to tour the Biltmore Estate.

My Project

Located on the western side of Forsyth County (NC) in a suburban community, seventh grade students at our middle school will have the opportunity to tour the Biltmore Estate in October of 2025.

For many of our students, this will be their first time visiting a historic site of this scale and significance.

Not only will visiting the Biltmore tie into the impact of the American Industrial Revolution (part of the social studies curriculum in seventh grade), students will be able to make direct connections with their Language Arts class, as well. At the start of the school year, the ELA teachers want to assign Serafina and Black Cloak to students.

Since the middle schools in our district no longer provide Chromebooks for students to take home, we are scaling back our methods to reflect pre-COVID teaching practices, which includes assigning ALL students a physical novel to read.

Unfortunately, we do not have enough copies of the novel for this assignment to be finished before the trip. We are hoping through this project, we can provide enough books for students to not only read at school, but also take home and experience the story at their own pace.

Reading the novel before visiting Biltmore brings the historic mansion to life in a thrilling way. This mystery, set in the halls, stairwells, and secret passageways of Biltmore, allows students to step into the shoes of a brave character who uncovers dark secrets hiding within the estate.

By exploring the setting through Serafina’s eyes, students will gain an appreciation for the architecture, atmosphere, and hidden corners of Biltmore. It transforms the field trip from a tour into an interactive literary adventure where fiction and history unit together.
