Learning About Science, Learning About Ourselves!

My students need stethoscopes, a model of a human torso (with removeable organs), and a digital blood pressure machine (with the batteries it needs to work).

My Students

It's true - sometimes the stuff we teach is irrelevant or outdated... but not always! Help my instruction on the human body be engaging and meaningful to my students - not just for their science test, but for their long, healthy, educated lives!!

I work at a public school that is designed to help students get back on track.

Students are referred to my school because, for one reason or another, they were not able to be successful in their regular classroom. While they are with us, we work to foster academic success, positive relationships, and a brighter future! I teach 7th grade science, but I hope the experiences in my classroom extend well beyond the walls of our school and the limits of the school year. My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but most have faced some kind of hardship - whether it is a critical financial situation, unstable home life, a crisis of one kind or another, or just the weariness of never quite achieving what seems to come so easily to others. While at our school, we hope to wipe the slate, even if just a little, and give students a chance to have a different set of experiences. We hope those experiences will then form the foundation for a new path - one of success and opportunity!

My Project

Would you be excited if I told you we were going to study eleven different systems within the human body, and that you could dust off the textbooks and start memorizing vocabulary? No? What if you got to hear your own heartbeat through a stethoscope or witness your body maintain homeostasis by monitoring your blood pressure while exercising? What if you were able to handle a model to see how our organs fit together and understand the complex and amazing design of your own body? I want my students to be engaged. I want them to have real and meaningful experiences so that their time in the classroom will truly carry over into their daily lives. Getting to use "real" equipment, hold models, and connect learning to their own experiences helps this to happen! The materials I can provide with your support makes it all possible.

My students might become a lot of things, but I KNOW that I have students who will become adults - professionals, parents, members of society.

We ALL need to value and understand our own health, which is why this unit is so important to me. I want my students to understand their bodies and how their choices and decisions can impact their lives for years to come. I want these lessons to be as rich and meaningful as possible so they stick with my students far beyond the walls of my classroom!
