This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember sitting in US History class, reading the textbook and wishing it were more interesting? My students feel that as well. With this project, I hope to make history come alive for them.
My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere.
My 5th grade class is in a high-need, low income public school, nestled in the heart of southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner, who looks for the next opportunity to learn.
My Project
Our focus in 5th grade is learning about the roots of the United States. We try to understand just how our country came to be. This is a task that many students find daunting.
In my experience, I have discovered that history is best learned by experiencing it. With the materials included in this project, my students will be able to gain a better understanding of how our country was formed by holding artifacts from that time, touching replica items, reading primary source documents and first hand accounts (which can be found in the literature requested.) By touching and feeling "real" historical objects, the students will be able to gain connections to the past in a way that no textbook can provide. They will be able to take their learning beyond just the printed page, and make a lifelong connection to it.
Through your contribution, you will be creating lifelong lovers of history.
The students will be able to go out into our world knowing the roots and beginnings of the United States, having connected to it in a deeper way. They will see the world differently because of you.
