Learning About Our Past With The You Wouldn't Want to Series

My students need sets of books so they can learn more about our fifth grade social studies curriculum. They will learn about Columbus, the colonists, and Lewis and Clark.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Kugelman's classroom raised $245

My Students

My students love learning about Social Studies because we use interactive journals where they can draw and write their responses. However, learning from our textbook and handouts I have created is not enough. I want my students to dig into non-fiction books that have a mix of illustrations and text.

I teach a wonderful group of thirty fifth grade students in Southern California.

Last year over 48% of the students qualified for free or reduced price lunch. Our school prides itself in integrating the arts and technology into our academic studies. Our class is noisy, lively, and fun because the students are learning a lot by being active and working in cooperative groups.

My Project

I have requested sets of books that the students will read on their own so they can practice their non-fiction reading comprehension and writing skills. The twist is that these books are fun and funny to read. The books include many from the series, "You Wouldn't Want to..." My students will delight in learning about Columbus, Lewis and Clark, the Boston Massacre, and life as a colonist. They will have so much fun reading these stories and looking at the illustrations, they won't realize that they are learning lots of interesting facts about our American history. These books will be placed in a center, so students can read, take notes, and later summarize what they learned in a few paragraphs. The skill of reading, taking notes, and summarizing in your own words can be difficult for some students. Thankfully, these books will be so fun to read that even my most reluctant readers and writers will want to work with these book during center time.

Your help in donating to this project is greatly appreciated.

School is for all children - our high level students and our students that are two grades below in their reading and writing skills. Help me reach all of my students with these marvelous and funny books.
