Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Level 1 school, with 656 elementary students from Pre-K through 8th grade. 48.8% of those students come from low-income households, 19.2% of the students are diverse learners, and 13.3% have limited English skills. Our classroom is comprised of pre-kindergarten students in a multi age setting.

In our classroom, there are high student expectations of independence and self-monitoring.

We believe that the overall understanding of one’s experiences is a genuine form of knowledge. This is why we saw the importance of allowing the child freedom to learn in a carefully prepared environment. The materials that we need in the classroom will aid in their self-exploration in which they can discover their strengths and weaknesses as they challenge the confines of their own realities.

My Project

I would like to include materials for the classroom that will feature and celebrate diverse children from all parts of the world. Through making their learning environment diverse, the children will explore other cultures through play, the arts, and literacy!

It is of utmost importance that children will see themselves represented in their learning environments.

I would like to include crayons for our classroom that come in all colors that people do! The children will be able to draw their family, friends, and themselves in their own skin colors. I also would like to incorporate multicultural toys and puppets for the children to explore and discover other cultures through play. Also through literacy, a discussion about cultural diversity using the book “All Kinds of Children” will let the children see what they have in common with children in their neighborhood, across the nation and around the world!
