My students need a refractometer to be able to tell how much sugar is in the solution.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Chimera's classroom raised $192

My Students
We live in a region known for its grape growing and wineries so we are offering a new elective. The students are excited to learn about this and we need some materials to get started!
My students are primarily juniors and seniors.
They are a pretty diverse group and our school has more than 50% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The students are motivated, especially when the course strikes their interest. This class will offer students a look at an industry that many are familiar with but know little about.
My Project
My students will be using the refractometer to determine the percent sugar remaining in solution while it ferments. This will indicate when the reaction is complete and offer an idea of how sweet the product will be in the end. Sometimes additional sugar can be added to increase flavor and sweetness depending on what is desired.
Students will get to use a scientific instrument to see how percent sugar is quantified in practice at a winery.
They have used a very crude and different method in their intro chemistry course. This will give them a more real life experience that may be encountered should they pursue this in college or as a hobby.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
