My Students

Our school is located in Queens, New York. We come from a culturally diverse area and work to provide equal opportunities for all!

My fifth-grade students are inquisitive and tech-savvy!

Their curiosity and interest in technology has helped promote our computer science program. We are the first class in the building to launch the Computer Science for All initiative. My students take pride in their work and are eager to learn.

Why should kids learn coding? Coding helps students learn problem-solving skills, encourages critical thinking and promotes creativity.

My Project

Our school has 32 robots (Dash and Dot) that students are able to program with iPads. Currently, our school has 2 iPads that were funded by donorschoose.org (thank you very much everyone!) Each robot can be synched to an iPad using the program Blockly. Students use the Blockly app to program the robot to move, dance, talk etc. I have been integrating the use of computer science throughout the school day in all content areas. Presently, my 32 students are sharing two iPads. If my classroom had more iPads, students would be able to work in partnerships to program and debug (fix algorithms) collaboratively with their partners. With additional iPads, I will be able to provide every student with an opportunity to program and write algorithms on their own.

Our school is committed to providing students with opportunities that prepare them for the 21st Century.

This year we began our journey with Computer Science. The impact this work has had on our students has been tremendous. Many of my students are now considering careers in the fields of technology, game and website design.
