Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, and College Biology.

One of my favorite units to teach in my biology class is genetic disorders and abnormalities.

This is a great way for me to incorporate teaching compassion to my students so they can understand other people who may not be like them.

Teaching compassion is about accepting and understanding that diversity and peoples' exceptionalities are what makes our student body and campus special and unique.

In order to do this, we need to understand one another. With the Disorder Detective Decals and Advanced Chromosome Analysis Kit, the students will work in pairs to learn about 10 identified and recognized disorders, one of which is Down Syndrome. The student will be given a case file and put the karyotype together, analyze for chromosomal abnormalities, and figure out if the patient has a disorder.

The student will create a pamphlet that would be at a doctor's office that explains how the disorder is inherited, when it can be diagnosed, symptoms, complications, and how the parents can prepare for their newborn who has the disorder.

My students will also attend the Unified Sports Games where students with special needs play against other Unified teams. Teachers bring their general education students to support and cheer for both teams playing. Students make signs and posters to support their peers with disabilities. The various colored paper, tape, glue, and paper cutter will be used to help put their projects and signs together.

Student success will be measured by the projects and signs they create. Students with Down Syndrome are on our Unified Sports team. It is important to teach my students about Down Syndrome before we attend the games.

The TPT gift card will be used to purchase templates for students who have difficulty drawing.
