My Project

At my school, we want to ensure that our scholars receive a high-quality public education to stay true to the namesake of our school. Throughout the upcoming school year, the fifth graders will be able to read a collection of culturally relevant novels that will help them to be exposed not only to award-winning literature and protagonists that are relatable and resemble them in ethnicity, age, or gender, but stories that help them learn more about history and hopefully empower them to want to make changes.

By exposing my students to literature that is well-written, and thought-provoking, I can help them better understand the culturally relevant issues, challenges, and opportunities of our nation's past and present.

Reading books like "Number the Stars", "The Giver", "Bud, Not Buddy", "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", and "Bridge to Terabithia" can help them identify with the characters and see the world through their eyes, while at the same time, making connections to the real world. Reading this literature will help them become more aware of the world around them and empower them to be leaders like the protagonists in the books. All of my students have this in them, and I hope to bring it out of them through these stories.

We hope to expand our worlds by reading these texts next year in fifth grade and expand the possibilities for these students to soar higher. With these grade level sets, we hope to inspire these 5th graders to become the leaders that they are meant to be.
