My Students
Were you the kid who would hide under the covers at night, light source in one hand, and a book in the other? I was and that is exactly the excitement for reading I am trying to create in the lives of my students.
My class is a 6th-8th grade, self-contained special education class in Brooklyn, NY.
The setting is an 8:1:1 with disabilities in our class including emotional, intellectual, and autism. Our school is a Title I school and composed of all special education classes. My classroom of all boys is made up of some of the most energetic and eager learners I have seen in my teaching career. While they perform below grade level academically, they are very social and aware of their performance in the classroom.
My Project
During the first week of the school year all of my students had their reading levels assessed. After doing so, I asked how many of them would like to read at a higher level by the end of the year. Everyone raised their hands. Although my students read significantly below grade level, their excitement for reading isn't diminished. They have the desire to learn, I have the desire to teach, and now you have the opportunity to make both happen! With such a limited classroom library I know my students aren't currently being given the best possible opportunity for learning. With a leveled class library, not only will they have more books to read, they will have a chance to build upon their reading skills and watch their abilities and reading levels grow.
As someone who can't remember a time in my life that I didn't constantly have my nose in a book, I can't imagine being in my students' shoes.
I know with an improved classroom library, more books, and an effective reading system my students too can become children on a constant quest for knowledge. I also know how valuable literacy and reading skills are and how they will use these skills for the rest of their lives. That is why this project is so important to me and I hope you agree!
