My students need Wikki Stix so that we can get our hands on letters, numbers, shapes, and spelling words.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. North's classroom raised $178

My Students
So imagine you're in first grade. You're struggling with everything in school. If a teacher asks you to show a number between 1 and 20 you don't know it. If a teacher asks you to write the the letter 'a' you hesitate.
Now, imagine that your teacher isn't one person but actually a series of substitutes sent in (God bless substitutes!
I was a building sub before I got a permanent job) because no one will take a permanent job at the school because it is slated to be closed at the end of the year. You go that entire year learning little, your school closes, and the next year you're in 2nd grade in a new school with the same skill deficits - not knowing letters, numbers, etc.
My Project
Okay, stop imagining. I have several students in my class and that has been their schooling experience. We are a low SES area (Southeast DC, if you're familiar) with a population that wants to learn but has a lot of factors to overcome. I'm working hard to build the skills that these kids missed out on in the past few years and several teachers recommended these wikki stix. I remember using them as a student teacher and how much the kids enjoyed bending the stix (I do wish they spelled 'stix' correctly...) to practice their spelling words. Some of my kids will be using them for spelling words (with lists of ten words, they pick five and I pick five), some will be using them for basic numbers and letters. Either way, it will make for a great station activity for both reading and math! I've done some preliminary google searches and it looks like there are some great lessons for science and social studies, too.
The more hands on, the better.
These are disadvantaged kids who have had a tough couple of years in school and have some gaps to make up in a hurry. Moreover, these stix are basically indestructible so you're looking at a contribution that my students will use for years to come.
