This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know someone with a disability? My students have speech and language disabilities. Sometimes due to Autism or Traumatic Brain Injury, or sometimes due to unknown causes, my students face significant challenges in their daily efforts to understand and communicate.
My students are the sweetest, most curious, playful, delightful children you will ever meet; however, due to their mostly "hidden" disabilities, the socialization and literacy activities that enrich our daily lives can be challenging for them to learn and master.
While my students have many, many strengths, they also face serious challenges. 76% of the students at my urban elementary school are economically disadvantaged. Some live in foster care or have an incarcerated parent. Many live in public housing, and many need free school breakfasts and lunches for healthy, filling meals. Their disabilities can become barriers to forming strong friendships, result in debilitating deficits in reading and writing, and may lead to academic failure, social isolation, and future economic disadvantage.
My students deserve the greatest chances to be happy, healthy, and successful! My mission is to help them thrive in a highly engaging, welcoming, and fun environment to maximize their exploration and learning.
My Project
Language, grammar, sentence structure, and puppets?! In the "speech room", that's how we roll! I'm requesting a variety of supplies to bump up the learning AND fun during speech & language therapy for students with language and learning disabilities in my Title 1 school.
When children can actively practice language and literacy skills through play, learning "sticks" and achievement soars!
From wiggle cushions to puppets, a new grammar curriculum, visual timer, laminating sheets, sheet protectors, and a pencil sharpener that actually works, all of the requested supplies will fill a significant need to support young children as they practice essential language, literacy, and social skills.
