My Students
My students have a variety of special needs in the area of speech and language, which includes social language skills. These needs include anything from a language delay, expressive and receptive language difficulties, social communication challenges, articulation impairments, childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering, autism and intellectual disabilities. They range in age from 3-years-old just starting preschool to 5th graders ready to move on to the world of middle school.
While their needs are diverse my students have one thing in common: they want to succeed!
My Project
My younger students have difficulty understanding and using language even during the most familiar routines in their lives. Some of them want to interact with other students, but don't yet have the social or language skills to do so. The best way I've found to inspire and motivate them to communicate is through high-quality literature and pretend play that is realistic and meaningful. Even my quietest students are compelled to practice and use language to pretend to fix cars, go get ice cream, and help beloved pets heal at the vet.
They gain exposure to target vocabulary and syntax in speech therapy with their peers and are able to bring these new skills back home with them where they can continue to use them in real-life.
Children learn best through play and these toys really bring their knowledge and imaginations to life.
