This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading is something we must learn to become successful. Many students do not have anyone to read to them at home. Struggling with decoding can take the pleasure out of reading. Books accompanied by audio allow children to read books they cannot read independently, encouraging the love of reading.
I have a group of very eager learners.
They love being read to because many have not developed the necessary skills to read the stories they are interested in. They are English Language Learners, many are new to The United States. They are, in many cases, in school for the first time. Our school is in one of the poorest congressional districts in New York so procuring necessary materials is difficult.
My Project
I am requesting 4 portable CD players. Students will take turns taking the CD players home daily. This will give my students the opportunity to select books as entertainment rather than to seek entertainment only from television and video games. This will help fill the gap that has been left because of years of not being read to.
So many of my students have never been read to at home for many different reasons.
Children have missed out on hundreds of wonderful stories, poems, nursery rhymes and more that I many of us grew up loving. Missing great works of children's literature puts them at a disadvantage academically, socially and culturally.
