Learn to Paint, and Paint to Learn

My students need paints, brushes and a drying rack to create art projects that incorporate Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science content. I will be using these supplies at both of my schools with K-6.

My Students

I have been teaching at a district in the Salt Lake City area for the past 15 years. I am a Visual Arts teacher at the elementary school level. This was the first public school in Utah to fully embed the 7-Habits of Effective Leadership into everyday teacher instruction and student learning.

One enters the school and notices throughout the halls there are university pennants and leadership quotes hanging.

Beginning in Kindergarten, students begin thinking ‘college-bound’, self-mastery and personal leadership. The schools celebrate cultural diversity with as many as 29 different language and 50+ nationalities within their diverse populations. At one school, thirty-eight percent are English Language Learners and sixty-seven percent of the school population qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. At the other school, sixty-five percent qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

They are the best kids, and these art supplies will help them learn the many valuable skills explored and learned through visual art. We need glaze, acrylic paints, India ink and other art supplies to experience a wide variety of art mediums.

My Project

I will use these materials to teach the elements of art and support learning in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.

The possibilities are endless what we can do with some core content, some eager kids and some paint.

For example we will paint the solar system using shading skills with sixth graders. We will make cave paintings and petroglyphs as my fourth graders learn about the native peoples of Utah. With third grade we can study illustrators and learn to paint using similar techniques. These materials will be used K-6 at two schools. We will use them often and well.
