Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you were able to build something and share it when your friends or family? My students want to build and share. These LEGO LearnToLearn kits and supplies will allow them to build in an educational way, and then write about and film their creations when they are done.

We are second grade classes from a low income public school in Arizona.

Funding is very limited in our community, and many students face great challenges. Our second grade has 60 students that need tools to help them explore and become inquisitive about the world around them.

My Project

Hands-on learning is so important to younger students. LEGO LearnToLearn kits to allow the entire 2nd grade at my school to explore building while following 15 sets of activities that come with the kits. This will help improve their ability to follow instructions, recipes and other forms of informational text. The students will also be able to come up with their own LEGO creation using the individual LearnToLearn packs that are included in the kit. We will use the kits as well as the additional supplies with our LEGO Story Visualizer software so that the students can publish their creations. This will help them learn about math, science, technology and language arts as well as public performance, as they film their video by speaking their written product, filming the LEGO, and sharing their video with other 2nd graders.

This project will make a difference not only in my class, but in the two other 2nd grade classes as well.

All 60 students will be able to use their own kit that has 72 pieces, and at the end of the year keep their kit. This gives them ownership over their materials (they are less likely to loose their pieces if they know the belong to them at the end of the year). They can collaborate and use their LEGO creations with another student to tell a truly wonderful story!
