This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school. The basic principle of Title I is that schools have large concentrations of low-income students. I teach kindergarten. I love teaching kindergarten. This is often the first year of school for many of my students. I love watching my students learn and see the sparks of connections.
Learning through play and hands-on materials are my favorite ways to teach my students.
Play is an important part of a child's early development. Playing helps young children's brains to develop and for their language and communication skills to mature. By teaching through play, young children learn about communication, develop their motor skills and help with problem-solving.
My Project
The use of manipulatives, like blocks, help students learn through play. Students are able to learn, share and problem solve. Learning to share and take turns is especially important in kindergarteners' social-emotional development.
There are many benefits when learning through play.
I have chosen the play-do stampers as one resource to accomplish this goal. Students can stamp numbers, letters or even make words all while playing with play-do. Number and alpha bots are great learning tools to begin learning letters, letter sounds and numbers.
Learning through play helps students' communication skills. Play helps children develop key language and communication skills.
Active play also quickly works to develop strong motor skills in children. Social and emotional development are strengthened through play.
Creativity and imagination are enhanced when students learn through play. And critical thinking and problem-solving skills are used when students work together.
