Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Story time, calendar math, and lessons: what do they all have in common? In kindergarten, they all require students to be sitting on the rug! As blending learning becomes part of our daily technology use and our class size increases, we need a rug that can accommodate all students.
The new kindergarteners are a bright group of 26 students eager to learn the alphabet, numbers, and to start reading.
They are excited to start coming to school everyday. They deserve to have the best classroom set-up so that they are in an environment that gives them the best chance for success.
Our school primarily serves low-income families from the surrounding neighborhoods. The school's decor emphasizes the importance of a college education, and each classroom is a different college that promotes just one more place for them to learn. The goal is that these students will apply the critical thinking skills they learn at our school to their future education and their lives.
My Project
The new rug will have 26 spots, one for each letter of the alphabet and one for each student in the class! This will be a great way for our kindergarteners to start the year. They will have a fun way to learn their alphabet by being assigned to sit on a letter! There are many fun games and seating arrangements that can be created to have students learn in an engaging way.
It has been challenging having a rug that seats 20 students with 22 students in the classroom. Having 26 students, but only 20 carpet seats will not work. This will result in about 20% of the class getting all instruction at their desk. Students at this age have a lot of energy and need the opportunity to move around. They also benefit from sitting up close to the whiteboard where new material is being presented.
This rug will help create a kid-friendly environment.
I can already imagine the buzz and excitement in the air as they discuss what letter they get to sit on. Please help make our kindergarten classroom a fun place to learn and grow for years to come!
