My Students
Imagine walking into a school for the first time and you do not speak the language or you have never been to school before. That is how most of my kindergarten children feel when they walk into my class for the first time.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds.
Many of the students come into kindergarten speaking English as a second language. They speak languages such as Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Ukrainian. Some of these languages use an entirely different alphabet! Additionally many of my students have never been to pre-k or any type of schooling before entering my class. They lack basic skills such as how to hold a book, identifying letter names and sounds, numbers, and shapes. They have enjoyed listening to stories for the first time and love to try and "read" the books we check out from the library each week.
My Project
We are in need of LeapPad learning tablets so that students can read books and play educational games independently. At least three times per week, students participate in centers where they work independently while I work with a small group of students. All of my students cannot read yet; LeapPads will allow the students to enter an imaginary world of reading, while I work with the other students. Additionally, students can use the LeapPad to strengthen skills such as identifying letter names and sounds and identifying numbers and shapes. The LeapPads come equipped with head sets so that other students are not interrupted when working with the devices. The tablets are visual, fun and perfect for second language learners to grasp this new language. Research has proven that when children play educational games, it can improve brain function and increase learning.
Donations will greatly increase the chance for my students to experience the benefits of LeapPads in the classroom.
The students will be able to read ebooks independently and learn basic foundational skills that are imperative in Kindergarten. English Language Learners will not only learn these important skills but they will also gain vocabulary from the English language through the ebooks and videos. Help my students build a strong foundation to be successful and become life long learners!
