Leaping into Literacy

My students need classic children's books written by highly acclaimed authors, manipulatives to enhance their narrative capabilities, and craft paper and assortment of craft supplies to recreate the stories they read using their own creativity and design.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. R.'s classroom raised $551

LEAPING OVER BARRIERS TO PROMOTE LANGUAGE THROUGH LITERACY!!!!!!!! Can you imagine a world where your parents were not able to read you a bedtime story? I teach in a Title 1 elementary school, servicing students from grades K-5. The majority of the students in the school come from poverty stricken homes. The parents of these children are extremely hard working and often are out of the house for many hours of the day working numerous jobs in order to support their families. As a result the parents of these children do not have the time, money or energy to read books with their children.

These children are missing a crucial component in their language development. It is a well known fact that literacy promotes language. Literacy enables children to expand their vocabulary, learn new sight words and learn from the lessons/ experiences of the characters in the books.

It is extremely unfortunate that these children do not have the privilege of being read to at home. I therefore feel, that as their teacher it is my responsibility to expose them to as much language and literacy as I possibly can. However, I can not do this alone. I need your help to purchase books, manipulatives and craft items to make my dreams a reality. Please join me in helping my students learn language through literacy.

You have the power to provide the crucial foundation that these children need to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
