My Students
Leaping into literacy in the beginning of the school year! We need to finish our classroom library, please help us! We need a variety of audio/cd books to make our library fun, interactive, and engaging to help us leap into learning! Please help support our library.
My classroom consists of children ages 5-7 who are diagnosed with Autism.
My students suffer from developmental delays in many different areas such as cognitive, emotional, social, behavioral, sensory processing, speech/language, physical, gross motor, and fine motor. My students have difficult paying attention during classroom activities, or being engaged in the activity. My students are often distracted, but work well with any source of media input such as computers, music, or audio cds. My students learn quickly when provided with the proper materials, but have a difficult time focusing when the proper materials are not available. Imagine living your life feeling behind, or left out. Many of my students are able to understand what is going on around them but may not be able to express it. My students need adequate opportunities to engage them in learning. Whatever happened to equal opportunity? Students with Autism need inventive and creative ways to engage them.
My Project
My students need two audio book sets to complete our classroom library. In past years teaching, I have come to realize that the most difficult time of day, is during group read alouds with my children. However, I have quickly come to learn that when books are on tape, my students pay more attention an rather quickly. My students seem to be more engaged, and will listen to the story being read. My students will even be able to answer questions upon completion of the story. I am hoping to provide my students with more opportunities for reading by having more audio books available for both classroom read alouds, and quiet time/independent reading areas. To provide a child who has very little to no independence, just some is an amazing thing. My students surprise me everyday with what they have learned, especially when I have discovered the ways to capture them into learning. I truly believe that these audio books will be a huge success in our classroom.
This is an amazing opportunity.
Please take part in helping society, and share with others the gift of a lifetime, the gift of literacy. These children are disabled, and disadvantaged in many aspects of their lives. They come from broken down homes, and impoverished neighborhoods where most students receive free lunch, and are witness to crime in or around their households. Please help make a difference in their lives, they deserve more than what they receive. Thank you for your generosity.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
