I work in a low-income school and our program is an at-risk Pre-K. At-risk factors include low-income, single family homes, incarcerated parent, English as a second language, etc. 32% of my students also qualify for my program by needing an IEP to help to with their academic, social, and health needs.
I have two sessions, AM and PM Pre-K classes, with 40 students total.
My students range in age from 3-5 years, and are energetic, talkative, caring, and social. Every student deserves enough hands-on materials to help them learn the skills and concepts necessary to be successful in Kindergarten.
My Project
My students love to be read to and listen to stories. They try to use our listening center independently, however trying to use a CD or cassette player is both challenging and outdated.
My students are in early childhood.
They love to read and love to see stories come to life.
My students struggle with being able to work the listening center in general and are stuck with listening to whatever book happens to be playing each day. By giving the students child-friendly programs like Leap Frog that allow them to use a touch screen, they can choose whatever book THEY want to listen to and read along with. This project is giving my students not only exposure to technology but also giving them a sense of independence.
More than half of students from low‑income households
