Have you ever opened a book, took out your pen, and started reading along in a book that talks back at you. These students are learning to enjoy books and learning new vocabulary while listening to books from Leap Frog Learners. Helps us open a good fun and read it all by ourselves.
My classroom is in a rural community in South Carolina.
We are a Title I school. Seventy five percent of my students live at the poverty level. More than half of my students do not live with their parents. Half of my students walk into the door for the first time and have never written their own name. These kids do not know their ABC’s or numbers much less have ever opened a book and looked through the pages. My challenge is to open their minds and teach them how to improve their lives. I encourage students to do their best work and to pick a college. This grant will help my students achieve their goals.
My Project
The Leap Frog Readers will be used during independent center time. Students will have 20 minutes a day to choose a center to practice social skills and to practice skills taught in class. My goal is for students to choose the reading center and to sit down with a book and practice listening to a story read to them and to eventually start reading along with the story. I think this grant will motivate my young students to want to open a book and explore what is inside and share their new knowledge with their friends. My students need 4 sets of Leap Frog Tag Readers to enhance independent literacy center time. These sets include headphones so others are not distracted.
This project is so important to my classroom.
My students need to be exposed to as many books as possible this year. Due to the economy class size has increased. I cannot read to every student individually each day, but with Leap Frog Reading System students can open a book and read without teacher assistance. Reading is first in my classroom and this grant will be a big step forward to reach our goal of independent readers.
