Leapfrog Into Learning And Language!

My students need 4 LeapPads for use in a newcomer center, as well as 1 set of the All Around Me Storybook Series.

This project is fully funded

I teach a 1st Grade Sheltered English Immersion classroom consisting of students from around the world who have just entered the country or been exposed to very little English at home. The children speak a variety of languages and dialects and are facing serious challenges as they work towards becoming literate and linguistically proficient in English.

Students enter my classroom throughout the year, with some students entering as late as the last month of school. Many times, the original students are well established in their routines upon a newcomer's arrival, but they still need as much small group and one on one instruction as possible. When a newcomer enters, it is very difficult to immediately integrate them into the regular routines of the classroom. They are nervous, intimidated by a new language and culture, and for some, it is their first academic experience. As the other students are reading and writing independently, newcomers may have no alphabetic knowledge or literacy skills in their native language. They need intense one on one instruction, but at the same time, the other children require instruction also.

Having a set of Leap Pads in the classroom would provide newcomers and beginning English Language Learners with a fun, engaging learning activity, while other children are working with the teacher. This would help to ease the students into the routines of the classroom without overwhelming them with activities they will not yet be able to complete with success.

By donating to this project, you will help many students as they enter what is truly a scary and nerve wracking situation. Instead of becoming frustrated by lessons and activities that may lead to a dislike of school and education, the Leap Pads will provide students with the opportunity to start their American education off in a calm, fun, less stressful manner.
