I differentiate instruction to accentuate, celebrate and liberate my learners! I teach a 3rd grade Collaborative Team Teaching class in a high-need community in the Bronx. My class is a CTT class because our population is 50% special education students, and 50% general education students who serve as academic role models. The goal for the entire class is to see them become independent, life-long learners. However, each child in the class attacks learning in their own way. We differentiate many facets of our students' learning experience to meet their specific needs and allow them to feel success and take ownership of their learning. We have "looped" from 2nd to 3rd grade with this class, and our aim is to increase the progress we have made with them. We left 2nd grade in June '07 with every student reading on the grade level.
Prior knowledge? It's the information a child brings with them to school. It's the experiences they've had, the books they've read and the vocabulary they've been taught. Most of our students come with limited prior knowledge due to, drug addictions at birth, life in homeless shelters, shootings in the school's playground, neglect, absence of both parents in the home, limited exposure to schooling before kindergarten or first grade, limited amounts of books in the home, limited exposure to a library and limited exposure to the English language as a whole, either as their first or second language.
Our students all benefit when we teach to the three learning styles. When a child can hear, see and "feel" what they are doing in school, the learning becomes more meaningful. Our students require the use of tools that allow them to use all three learning styles, and the LeapPads do just that. They allow the students to see the words on the page and read along, hear the words being read to them through earphones, and use a "pen" to guide them through games, quizzes, vocabulary and retellings of the story they are reading. Having 6 LeapPads in the classroom allows every child to have access to a Leap Pad every 4th day. Children can use the LeapPads during reading, science, and even math time. LeapPads can be used with writing to help develop fine motor skills, practice cursive handwriting and draw pictures.
Our students see such little caring from the world around them. They live in terrible living conditions where the streets are unsafe after 5pm. You would make a difference to these children by showing them that someone in the world cares about their learning. Every time they used a LeapPad, our students would know that you thought they were important enough to deserve a terrific learning tool. They are aware of their "situation" and are old enough and smart enough to know that not all people in the country live like they do. Help them to understand that there are people in the world and the country who want them to succeed, want them to grow to old age, and become valuable members of society.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
