FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lau's classroom raised $672

This project is fully funded

I am a Kindergarten teacher in an ELD (English Language Development) class in a public school in San Francisco, California. My goal this year is to purchase LeapFrog LeapPad story titles for LeapPads in my classroom. The LeapPads are electronic personal learning tools which allow students to enjoy stories independently while developing the essential pre-reading skills. The LeapPads are great tools in the classroom because they allow for students to read independently and interactively. I currently have a limited number of story titles, and in order for the students to continue practice reading and enjoy reading with the use of this electronic personal tool, more stories are needed. The students I work with come from many different backgrounds/ cultures, and I have many students whose first language is not English. Our school has a large Asian population, and most of the students that attend our school English Language Learners (ELLs). Many of the students do not live in the neighborhood, but from other parts of the city. The students have working parents, and often do not have the support at home needed to help them at school. The students in the classroom have had the opportunity to use the LeapPads, but we are limited to 4 titles with 2 copies of each story. The LeapPads have been a wonderful addition to the classroom, but unfortunately, the limited number of titles I have and the limited levels of the reading materials do not meet all the needs of the students. Diversifying the title selection and allowing more students time to use the LeapPads will greatly benefit them. The students will be able to use it during Center Time in which all students will have the opportunity to use the Leap Pads as well as a "Free Choice" activity, which will allow for student choice. I currently have 17 students in the classroom, and all students will benefit from the use of the LeapPad systems. All students will be able to use the systems individually as well as with a partner. Students learn best when it is student selected as well as "peer" teaching. Students will feel success and have fun, and that is the key to their success.
