My students need books that will continue their interest in reading. We don't have a library at our school and the kids have gone through most of the books in the classroom. We need interesting books!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves at-risk scholars from the neighborhood of Pico-Union, and our mission is to provide every one of our students with the education they will need to pursue degrees at four-year colleges and universities. My students are truly amazing young men and women who are passionate, brilliant, and kind.

Most of my students are Latino, and almost all will be the first in the families to graduate from 4-year colleges and universities.

Almost all come from predominately Spanish-speaking homes and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some come from troubled backgrounds or a lack of home support. Yet, these students work long hours to hone their skills in reading, writing, math, science, music, language, and fitness. They bring joy to learning through their creativity and curiosity. The amount of grit and focus these students show every day is truly amazing.

My Project

Students at my school are great readers. They are imaginative, inquisitive, and focused. We spend 30 minutes every day on silent reading, a sacred time of the day when they can choose a book and read quietly without interruption. They've read so much over the course of the year with the result that some students improved their reading levels by leaps and bounds.

Our school does not have a library, meaning all the books they read are from the classroom library.

The students are running out of books to read, a serious issue that may stop their growth in reading.

The books selected here are ones that students are interested in reading. By having more books in our classroom library to choose from, my students will continue their reading growths and learn to love reading for life. Please support these students in becoming brilliant readers.
